Background

K. Kurz moved to her Cape home in Hampden in 2009.  The home was insulated with standard fiberglass batts, rated at levels of R-6 or less due to poor quality and excessive air leakage.  The concrete block foundation and the rim joists in the basement were not insulated at all.  This was inadequate for the home, resulting in drafts and high fuel bills.

Key Reasons for Project

Energy bills were extremely unreasonable and comfort levels varied around the home.
This home exchanged more than its total volume of air every hour!

Getting Started

K. contacted Penobscot Home Performance to conduct an energy evaluation in October 2010.  Paul Shepherd performed whole-house diagnostic tests to find out what was causing the home’s comfort, health, and energy issues.

Top Priorities Identified

The main priorities in the Kurz home were air sealing, followed by insulation upgrades.  The images below show the attic and basement, both of which are now properly air sealed and insulated to R-60 and R-14 respectively.

Summary of Benefits

By following through with installation upgrades by Penobscot Home Performance, K. was able to reduce air leakage by nearly 40%, lower her energy bills, and improve the overall comfort in her home.

Results

K. has reported, “From Apr. 2009 - Apr. 2010, we used 715 gallons of heating oil, BUT - we didn't have our first oil delivery that year (we had just bought the house) until June 15th, so in reality if we had been in the house, we would have used oil from Apr - June 15th that isn't accounted for in the 715 gallons.
From April 2010 - April 2011, we used 607 gallons.”
